Winter Wonderland

There is something about Winter. You either love it or hate it or you are like me in between. You love December and approaching Christmas but you are pretty much over it after that. Like January is really depressing, dark and cold and you start to long for blooming Daffodils and the scent of Spring which takes ages to come.

This Winter my children are excited like each year about Christmas and presents and Christkind (in Austria we celebrate Christkind and not Father Christmas like in England and my other home Australia). The little angelic cherub is much beloved by the children and highly anticipated. My son is 4 and my daughter 7 so they still very much believe in Christkind. I have a feeling I am going to be very sad when the day comes and they no longer believe in such things and somehow are more serious and older. I will miss their innocent banter and this vivid excitement in their eyes just by the mention of Christkind.

So the house is decorated in Christmas spirit, already since end of November and tons of Christmas biscuits (as we say Kekse here) are baked and now we sit and wait (well not literally sit and wait) but you know what I mean. It is such a special time of year, really the most wonderful time of the year as the song goes.

I have to admit I don’t miss Australian Christmas at all. It was always so hot and humid and somehow having Christmas in Summer was simply just not right. It felt wrong, always. But you get used to it and still you long for jumpers, cold weather and snow. Here we have plenty of snow! Already in December this year which is fun and beautiful to see. Kids are overwhelmed with joy when they see snow and want to run with their little feet in snow and play as much as possible. Of course building a snowman is a must, although this year at least this first one turned out a bit on the skinny side.

Wishing everyone a happy holiday season and a wonderful Christmas!
